Provision/allocation of Alternative communication facilitators:

A ‘Lip-speaker’ is a hearing person who has been professionally trained to be easy to lipread. Lip-speakers reproduce clearly the shapes of the words and the natural rhythm and stress used by the speaker. A lip speaker lips the source language information word by word to the deaf or hearing-impaired person who wishes to access the information

A lipreader is a hearing person who has been professionally trained to lipread. The lipreader deciphers words based on lip movements and facial expressions and audibly “voices” these words in the same spoken language in which they were mouthed.

A whisper interpreter sits or stands next to a client and whispers a rendition of the message simultaneously into the client’s ear, or microphone of the assistive device.

A ‘gesturer’ is a hearing person who has been professionally trained how to gesture concepts and information to a deaf person or hearing-impaired person. The gesturer will often support these gesturers by producing clear mouth movements to augment lipreading.

A visual sketcher is a person who has been professionally trained to produce source language information in a visual format.

A note-taker is a person who has been professionally trained to reproduce the source language information in a note-taking system readily accessible to the client who needs the service.

A transcriber is someone who transfers information from the spoken word into a readily accessible text format.

A Cued Speech practitioner uses Cued Speech to convey the sounds that make up the words someone is saying so that another person (who understands Cued Speech) can understand word for word what was being said in the same language that it was said in.

Captioning is a very specialized type of transcription. A Captioner provides Captioning (or subtitling), which is a textual, real-time accompaniment to a piece of media.
